The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that vaping has reached “epidemic proportions” amongst teens nation-wide. As part of the School’s For Life program, Berkshire has been taking, and will continuing to take, steps to address this issue by providing preventative education to our students about the dangers of e-cigarette use and nicotine addiction.
Over Fall Parents’ Weekend, Berkshire hosted an educational seminar for parents on Vaping and Teens followed by a Q&A with Tobacco-Free Community Partnership Program Director Joyce Brewer from the Berkshire Area Health Education Center. Brewer talked about the facts of e-cigarettes, the reasons to be concerned about youth vaping, and how to talk to children about this topic.
Berkshire’s Wellness and Counseling Office is available to provide confidential support and advice to students and their families for any concerns related to e-cigarette use or for those who would like additional information or treatment recommendations around the issue of teen vaping and nicotine addiction. In addition, students or families may contact Berkshire's Student Health Service in regards to medical services related to vaping, or the Student Life Office on the School's major rules and disciplinary response to vaporizers and e-cigarettes, which is also available in the Parent/Student Handbook (pages 8-11).
On November 1-2, FCD Prevention Works has been invited to campus to speak to our entire community about Freedom from Chemical Dependency. During this two-day visit, FCD representatives will work with our fourth formers (10th grade) in their Health and Wellness classes.
