Basketball - Boys Junior Varsity vs. The Taft School

Event Type: Regular

Date: January 15, 2014

Score:Berkshire 28 - Taft 41

Event Recap:
The boys traveled (again) down route 63. This time to take on a tall and athletic Taft squad. The boys played really, really hard and made a game of it, despite the continuation of our scoring woes. We made some serious defensive updates since our last game, and it really paid dividends -- it was not easy for our opponents to score.
Both teams, in fact, were sloppy with the basketball in the first half and there were numerous turnovers and whistles. Patrick Frey '15 and Milton Martinez '15 both came in off the bench to give good minutes to keep us in it -- as did Sean Speegle '17 and Jack Weeden '17. Martinez's buzzer beating jumper (off a turnover) to close the half pulled us to within 6 at 21-15.
Despite that momentum, the start of the second half was a bit of deja vu all over again -- as, like at Gunnery, we couldn't score. We went the first 8 minutes without a bucket and Taft pulled away. To the boys' credit, though, they kept battling and, after a defensive switch gave us some energy -- we put together a bit of a run. Jack Scarafoni '17 keyed the run and got us going. Weeden contributed a big score off a turnover, and Speegle played some excellent D. The quick run got us to within 8 or 9 but that was about as close as we could get as the Rhinos road away with the win.
Some good things in the game, especially the more consistent effort on the defensive side of the floor and, in general, more hustle and energy. Something to build on as we look ahead to Kent (who beat Taft earlier this year) on Saturday.
