Hockey - Girls Junior Varsity
|Date:||January 11, 2014|
|Score:||Berkshire 1 - Canterbury 5|
On the road again, the Berkshire Bears suffered another difficult defeat, this time at the hands of a skilled Canterbury team. Goalie Haleigh Sullivan ‘15 earned 27 saves in the 5-1 loss.
Caught off guard by a speedy team, the Bears found themselves in a 1-0 hole less than three minutes into play as a Canterbury center rushed the puck through the defense and rifled a shot past Sullivan. Battling throughout the period, Berkshire plugged away in front of the Canterbury net but found the tender to be tough to get past. Finally finding their way onto the scoreboard, Elle Mattsson ‘15 carried the puck into the offensive zone and connected with Logan Bell ‘15 in the slot for a goal at 5:59. Not to be outdone, Canterbury struck back with under a minute remaining to take the 2-1 lead.
Keeping the pressure on in the second period, both teams worked for ten shots each as the goalies battled to protect their real estate. With 9:46 on the clock, Canterbury opened their lead to 3-1 as their starting line once again tic-tac-toed the puck through the Bears in their own zone. Despite solid physical play and good passing, the Bears struggled to gain any traction in the second period, and entered the third feeling already exhausted.
With two more goals from the formidable Canterbury starting line in the third, the deal was sealed and the Berkshire girls closed the game frustrated after being stopped in front of the net 37 times in 45 minutes of play.With a game-free Wednesday on the calendar, the Bears have plenty of time to work through their points of improvement and are looking forward to their first home game of the year on Saturday versus Kent School.
