Bears bring home their first win of the season!
In a valiant effort led by a squad of gritty seniors, Berkshire fought hard through overtime to secure a victory, 8-7. Sophie Perekslis '14 hopped onto the ice with an eye for the goal as she scored her first, then second, then third goal of the season, all in the first period. Greenwich Academy and their fleet of seasoned skaters answered with a few goals but Haleigh Sullivan '15 had some heroic saves to keep the score at 3-2. The Gators of GA tied it up in the beginning of the second only for Pererkslis to answer with her fourth goal of the game. Shortly after, Olivia Mason '13 found the back of the net on a scramble in front of the net, followed by an excellent rebound from Logan Bell '15 moments later.
At the third-period buzzer, both teams hit the ice with excitement. The Bears knew that they had to play tough defense and get the puck deep to preserve their lead but the Gators pressured the puck and quickly scored to tie it up. There were many scrambles in front of the net but Sullivan stood on her head, making some excellent diving glove saves and using her body well. In the final two minutes, Bell buried her second goal of the game, but, after the next face-off, GA skated the puck hard and beat Sullivan to tie the game. In a quick huddle before overtimes, the Bears strategized and knew they wanted to leave everything out on the ice at Chelsea Piers. As the five minute overtime began counting down, a number of battles ensued. Four minutes went by scoreless. On a 2v1 breakaway with Mason, Bell ended the game with 41 seconds to play on a beautiful goal to complete her hat trick and clear the bench. What a great team effort against a strong GA squad. Up next, the Martlets of Westminster.
