Hockey - Boys Thirds
|Date:||January 5, 2013|
|Score:||2 - 4|
Event Recap:Thirds hockey recorded their first loss of the season Saturday, falling to the Winged Beavers of Avon 4-2. With goalie Andrew Koudis '16 sitting out on the advice of his agent (he's holding out for a contract extension based on his stellar performance in December's Millbrook game), Philly Phenom Roy Faigenbaum '14 got the start in net for the Bears. In addition to Koudis, a couple of other players were on the Physically Unable to Perform list, so coach Minnesota Mike Bjurlin reached out to the Rec. team for some call-ups, and installed a sophisticated new offensive system that appropriately accommodated the strengths of the available personnel.
Bjurlin's system worked to perfection in the first period, as the Bears took the lead on a goal from team scoring leader Charlie "Chuckles" Erdmann '16. After Avon put two quick goals past Faigenbaum early in the second, the Bears evened it up as Jeff Meeker put the biscuit right on the stick of Eric "Smithers" Smith '14, who dangled so long before burying the puck that coach Bjurlin dozed off at the far end of the bench. The strain of keeping up with the up-tempo offensive system caught up with the Bears in the third period and the Beavers put two pucks by Nick "Great Wall" Greco '13 late in the period to make the final tally 4-2 in favor of the visitors. The team travels to Watertown, CT on Wednesday to take on the Taft Rhinos, and Greg Massini is outside working on the team bus right now, making it look mean.
