On the heels of their winter vacation, the girls were itching to get back into action and open their home season. Once the dust settled after the boys' tri-tilt, the Bears welcomed perennial rivals Canterbury. An hour later, the home team had secured a strong 7-0 victory over the visitors, beginning the new year on a bright note.
Sixth form co-captains Chase Gerber and Maisie Noesen led the way on court one. Gerber was even after two games but won the third and fourth at 5 and 4 for a solid win at #2. Noesen survived a bloody knee and played strong squash in the first position, earning a 3-0 win. Returning players Michaelann Denton '14, Edeline Loh '14 and Allie Brazo '14 also claimed straight-game victories in the #3, #5 and #7 positions, respectively.
The real heroics on the afternoon came from two newcomers. Clementina Davila '14 slugged her way to a thrilling five-game victory, taking the odd games in her match and securing her first-ever victory in match play at #4. Not to be outdone, fellow rookie Olivia Silverman '15 dropped her first game 11-2, struggling with her movement and a nasty blister on her racquet hand. Undeterred, Silverman took a crucial second game 12-10, fell again in the third, then swiped the fourth and fifth to claim the victory and earn "The Cub" for her gritty performance.
