Basketball - Girls Varsity
vs. Stoneleigh Burnham School
|Date:||December 14, 2013|
|Score:||Berkshire 56 - Stoneleigh Burnham 32|
The Berkshire Bears braved the weekend snowstorm and traveled to Stoneleigh Burnham for a Saturday afternoon matchup. Coming off a double overtime loss to Hotchkiss and a tough week of practice, the Bears were looking to get back to their winning ways and improve their execution on both the offensive and defensive ends. After a strong start and holding Stoneleigh scoreless for the first few minutes of the game, Berkshire was up by 12 at halftime. However, their intensity cooled off toward the end of the first half, and they took the floor for the second half determined to make adjustments and dominate the rest of the game. All 11 Bears got in the rotation in the second half of the game, and Berkshire came away with a 56-32 victory over Stoneleigh.
Three Lady Bears scored in double figures: Samone DeFreese ’16 (16 points), Kristalyn Baisden ’15 (12 points), and tri-captain Hannah Cooke ’14 (10 points). Kendall Smith ’14 also had eight hard-earned points, including a handful of trips to the free throw line, and nine boards as the team’s leading rebounder for the day. Emmi Graebner ’14 contributed a number of beautiful passes to Smith and DeFreese in the paint. On the defensive end, DeFreese and Baisden each had five steals, and Cooke recorded two blocks, despite being far from the tallest player on the floor. Sarah Kinney ’15 and Graebner battled against some extremely strong girls from Stoneleigh, and both helped keep the defensive intensity high in the second half. In one of the most exciting plays of the game, Nicky Friedman ’15 drained a three-point shot to end the game off a beautiful pass from Mary Ward ’15.
Many thanks to our bus driver for getting us home safely!! The girls will hit the books for a week of finals before heading to Pomfret School on Thursday to play in the two-day New England Girls Basketball Invitational.
