The Lady Bears ventured down the road to Middlebury, CT on Saturday afternoon to take on Westover School. The Bears eased their way into the game, and even allowed Westover to hold a 6-5 lead for the first couple of minutes before exploding off the press and never looking back. Led by Samone DeFreese ’15, Kristalyn Baisden ’15, Hannah Cooke ’14, and Emmi Graebner ‘14 on the press, the Bears went on a huge run and quickly put the game out of reach for Westover. All 12 girls saw solid minutes in both halves, and Coach Smith made the sure to keep the energy level high by cycling all of the Lady Bears throughout most of the game.
Three players were in double figures – DeFreese (22 points), Cooke (16), and Baisden (11) – and nine scored in Berkshire’s 73-33 victory. Baisden and Cam Biasin ’14 had great passing days with seven and five assists, respectively. Biasin also led the team in rebounds with six. The team had an impressive 24 steals and controlled the boards for the entirety of the game. Katie Stonecipher ’15 and Graebner both had a strong rebounding day, and Nicky Friedman ’15 (don’t be fooled by her size – the girl has ups!) had two big blocks. In the final moments of the game, Friedman drove hard on the baseline and found Stonecipher, who hit a foul line jumper to cap of the Bears’ great day. Co-captains Olivia Smith ’14 (seven points) and Britt Brown ’13 (2 points) were proud of the team’s positivity throughout the game and the effort that the Bears put forth despite playing a weaker team.
Next up is a rematch against Hotchkiss on Wednesday afternoon. In their first matchup of the season, the Bears won by eight, but both teams have been working hard to improve since then. Game time is 2pm at Hotchkiss.
