Hockey - Girls Varsity
|Date:||February 16, 2013|
|Score:||1 - 3|
Event Recap:On a day full of Westminster match-ups, the girls varsity hockey team were excited to face the Marlets in a game that always entertains the crowd. The Bears were hungry from the get-go, forechecking with speed and grit, working very well as an entire unit. They completely dominated the first 8 minutes of the game, keeping the puck in the Westminster zone for minutes at a time. And every time the puck popped out of the offensive zone, the Bears were there to knock it back in, forecheck, and cycle the puck around. While no goals came from Berkshire's aggressive play, it forced Westminster to take a time-out half way through the first period. Played definitely evened out after the time-out, but the Bears were able to strike first when Kylie Wilkes '16 scored by getting the puck on net with 1:08 left in the period! The second period was less fruitful for the Bears as the Marlets scored two consecutive goals, putting them ahead 2-1 going into the third period.
Berkshire knew that they had their work cut out for them in the third period. Several chances came from the Berkshire forwards, who continued to do a fantastic job of cycling the puck and attacking the net. Veteran forwards Rhiannon Vanderbeek '13, Murphy Newman '13, and Lauren Henman '14 hustled and dug in, but just couldn't capitalize. Defensive partners Kira vonSteinbergs '13 and Olivia Good '15 contributed to the offensive play as well, while still being strong on defense. Time ticked down and the Bears pulled goalie Jeanne Morin '13 with a minute left to go. A chip out play by the Marlets allowed them to score a third, empty net goal. The Bears worked very hard and cannot be disappointed by their efforts. The final score was 3-1 Westminster. Berkshire plays Taft on Wednesday afternoon in their final home game of the season.
