Hockey - Girls Varsity
|Date:||January 23, 2013|
|Score:||1 - 1|
Event Recap:In sub-freezing weather, the girls varsity hockey team traveled to The Gunnery on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams were relatively evenly matched and neither team was able to capitalize on their opportunities in the first period. At the half way point in the first, a flurry of shots taken by the Highlanders challenged Jeanne Morin '13, but she managed to make some beautiful saves and keep the Bears in the game. Heading into the second period, the score was even at 0, but the momentum took a shift away from the Bears when the Highlanders went on the power-play. Despite some solid penalty killing, the consistent pressure was a little bit too much for Berkshire to handle, and Gunnery scored. The score was 1-0 heading at the end of the second, and the Bears had to step up their play if they wanted to even out the play.
The Bears responded well to the adversity they faced in the first two periods and played a much more solid third period. Ronnie Lortie '14 and Olivia Good '15 both played very well on defense. Good was hustling as hard as she could to win every little battle along the boards and each zone. Also showing her aggressive side with intensity and tenacity was Rhi Vanderbeek '12, who did not let up, even in the final minutes of play. As time ticked down, the Bears felt the pressure and knew they had to find a way to score. In the final five minutes, the forwards were able to establish some pressure and cycle down low. Eventually, the puck popped up to Kira von Steinbergs '13 at the point, who ripped a hard and low shot that trickled through the goalie and past the goal line! The Bears tied it up with just over 3 minutes to go. While neither team was able to score in the third, it was a solid effort in the end for the Bears, with a final score of 1-1. They face Millbrook on Friday evening.
