Lacrosse - Boys Junior Varsity vs. The Taft School

Event Type: Regular

Date: April 5, 2014

Event Recap:
On a cold, windy day, the Berkshire Bears lost to Taft 11-9.
The Bears put forth a strong effort, and played with a renewed vigor after a good couple days of practice.
Goalie Yuze Zhang had 9 saves on the day. He was able to turn away several shots from point blank range, while also making some key outlet passes to spark our transition offense.
Defensively, the combination of Sean Speegle, Tyler Smith, and Kevin Crabtree continue to grow as a unit and played very well against a strong attack. At one point a Taft attackman took a baseball swing at Tyler Smith who was clearing the ball down the field. Unfazed, Tyler ran through the check as the attackman's shaft snapped in half.
The brightest spot on defense today was the emergence of Derrick Burt at the long stick middie position as he scooped up groundballs like a vacuum and provided the strong wing presence we have been lacking on the face-off.
Down on offense, the day belonged to Sam Merrill who finished the day with 6 goals and 1 assist. Nick Palumbo contributed 1 goal and 2 assists, while fellow attackman Larry Matt added both 1 goal and 1 assist. Midfielder Viggo Blomquist also found the back of the net, while Ehan Keator added an assist.
The Bears look to continue building momentum as we take on Avon Wednesday afternoon.
