Crew - Girls Varsity Smith/Alumnae Cups

Event Type: Regular

Date: May 14, 2014

Event Recap:
Girls' Crew traveled to Lake Waramaug this afternoon to contest the Alumnae Cup with Gunnery, Taft, and Canterbury. It was a beautiful spring afternoon, and a steady tailwind made for some quick racing. First up, the second boat of Molly "Iron Lung" O'Neill, '17, Morgan "Windy City Wunderkind" Handwerker, '15, Moet "et Chandon" Matsuoka, '17, Lindsy "Headgear" Dario, '17, and cox Lulu "I'm a twin" Kauffman, '17 rowed a solid race to defeat Canterbury, finishing behind Taft and Gunnery. Despite not ever having finished first, this boat has always finished with someone behind them in their races. The first boat of Sophie "Perky" Perekslis, '14, Annette "Ginger" Key, '16, Arwen "El Presidente" Neski, '15, Renee "Aspen" Dreher, '15, and cox Olivia "So" Good, '15, once again had to come from behind (a pattern this season) to earn the win. After a slow start, the girls worked their way through the field to finish about 3 seconds ahead of a surprising Canterbury crew, and 4+seconds ahead of Taft and Gunnery. It was the first time in the past 10 years that the first boat has won this race. On Saturday, the girls will travel to scenic Lake Lilinonah to take on Canterbury, Hopkins, and Derryfield in their final regular season race. Then it's on to New Englands!
