Crew - Girls Varsity
|Date:||April 19, 2014|
Event Recap:Girls' crew finishes behind Choate, ahead of Taft. Girls' crew hosted Taft, Choate, and Chase Collegiate for their first race of the season this Saturday. Racing on their home course at Camp Sloane, both boats turned in a solid effort. The second boat (Morgan Handwerker, '15, Moet Matsuoka, '17, Lindsy Dario, '17, Gwynne Domashinski, '16, and cox Lulu Kauffman, '17) found themselves tangled up with Taft 400 meters into the race. As the Choate boats moved away, the Bears and Rhinos managed to separate themselves and continue racing. The girls moved steadily away from their opponents, finishing well ahead of the Taft boat. In the first boat race, a mixed line-up rowed the newly-christened Callisto to a strong second place finish. With stroke and captain Sophie "Lyons" Perekslis, '14, sidelined with laryngitis (oh, the irony!), the team shuffled line-ups. Renee "Aspen" Dreher, '15, took over the stroke seat, followed by Arwen "President-elect" Neski, '15, novice phenom Molly O'Neill, '17, and Annette "fresh off the slopes" Key, '16, who switched sides for the occasion. Cox Livy "B" Good, '15, called an excellent race, holding off challenges from Taft before the girls moved away from the Rhinos in the last 300 meters. A very experienced Choate crew finished first. Throughout the day, crews dealt with 15+ mph headwinds and heavy chop that made rowing more of a challenge than it already is. On Wednesday, the girls travel to Pomfret for their annual race on Quasset Pond against the Griffins.
