Berkshire finished off a great season with an exciting win against Westminster. Our opponents came ready to play and they made it a match as close as the score indicates. It a fun environment that included live video web streaming (a big thank you to Cory Anderson, Ken Sperl, Bebe Bullock and Anna Barter!!!), the presence of several sets of parents who had not yet been able to attend a match and also the emotions that came with the conclusion of many high school careers. It was all for good reasons but the Bears showed quite a bit of nervousness. Mikey Denton and Clementina pair up one last time at #1 doubles and, once they got their legs moving and found their timing, were able to earn a win. This match was the final high school doubles match for all four seniors and the final handshake brought with it a nice moment with opponents comforting one another. At #2 doubles, Aly and Allie capped off a great season with a serious comeback, erasing a 1-4 deficit and going a run of games to close out the match. At #3, Mia and Tatum couldn't quite get in sync, though they fought hard at the end of the match to make it close. Exhibition doubles brought with it the return of LJ Branch after a long hiatus and she and Hadley did well in defeat against a strong team.Unfortunately, Caroline Welch was unable to play today because of an injured finger. This was too bad since her play has continued to improve all season.
In singles, Clem's opponent played well and they put on a good match for the spectators. It was fun to see Clem share the moment with her parents. At #2, Mikey finished off a fantastic season and a great career at Berkshire with a solid win. Aly Hall completed her undefeated season at #3, also able to enjoy parental presence for the first time. Allie Brazo was matched up against a brutally effective, steady opponent and played a good second set. As always, she gave everything she had and represented herself well once again as she has throughout the entirety of her four year career. At #5, Hadley Laskowski was engaged in the tightest match of the day with very strong performances on both sides. In the end, her opponent took the third set breaker but it was a great match with huge effort from both sides. At #6, Madison came on strong in the second set but her opponent kept the pressure on in a match that included some very long points. In exhibition play, LJ Branch played magnificently in defeat in a very long pro set. With full rehabilitation for her leg, the future is bright.
This match was the last chapter in an historic season for the Bears. With an 11-1 record and a run to the finals of the New England tournament, there were plenty of wins but it was more about the spirit, teamwork and the way that this team was able to enjoy the moments that constituted a fantastic season. Going forward, they will be able to remember a season shared with great teammates that was rewarding and meaningful. The members of this team made sure to make this season everything we hoped it would be. It started well in Florida and finished well. Congratulations to this great group!
