It was a back and forth game to the end in the Bears’ home Saturday game against a talented Suffield team. Suffield came out strong in the top of the first and capitalized on a few Berkshire mistakes to put a run on the board. Berkshire was quick to respond in the bottom of the inning, bringing the game back to a tie score. The second inning remained scoreless, but the third and fourth innings saw some quality hitting to knock in runs. Back to back doubles by Francesca Ghi ’14 and Caitlin Kiene ’13 scored a run in the third, and a triple from Olivia Smith ’14 followed by a double from Ivey Mueller ’16 scored one in the fourth.
With the score 3-2 Berkshire going into the fifth, the Suffield offense was not done and put up one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to put them ahead by one. Despite a triple from Lauren Henman ’14 to lead off the bottom of the sixth, the Bears were unable to tie it up going into the seventh. Good defense in the top of the seventh kept the score at 4-3 Suffield, but the Bears needed to come up big offensively in the bottom of the last inning. They did just that. With one out and no one on, Krissy Govertsen ’15 tripled to get the bats going. Annie Love ’16 then knocked her in to tie the score at 4. Ghi t then walked to put two runners on base for Kiene coming up next. Kiene hit a bomb for a walk-off would-have-been triple to end the game.
It was clearly a full team effort, with eight of the nine players in the lineup getting hits for a total of 13 on the day, including Govertsen who went 3 for 4 with a triple. The defense was strong as well, including two great catches in right field by Taylor Willi ’16 and solid pitching from Kiene.
The Bears have a big game at home again on Wednesday at 2:30 against Millbrook.
