Event Recap:The Bears welcomed the Williston Wildcats last Saturday for the second JV volleyball game of the season. The team came out strong in the first set, with newcomer Pamella Dutra '14 delivering a streak of four solid serves that helped Berkshire secure an early 7-4 lead. The Wildcats countered with some solid defense, and the two teams traded the lead up until co-captain India Coard '16 stepped into the service position with the score at 15-13. India dished up five consecutive serves, not a single one of which came back over the net. With victory in sight, the team worked together beautifully to cinch the first set, 25-17.
The second set started off a bit shaky, as the Bears seemed to lose their focus and the steady serving that had anchored them in the first set began to waver. With the score 3-7, Coach Connell called a timeout to recenter the Berkshire squad, and when Colleen Devanney '15 stepped up to serve the next three points, her cool confidence helped the team get back on track. Molly Coleman '17 was a consistent force on defense, and the front-row combination of Didi Fade '17, Sophie Needles '16, and Silvana Gomez '17 helped India Coard hang onto the serve for seven consecutive points, including two aces. When the dust settled, Berkshire had once again come out on top, 25-17.
The third and final set was both thrilling and brief. Ieva Butkute '16 brought the team an early lead, with her four unreturned serves that left the score at 8-3. Julie Kokot '17 anchored the back row with her reliable passing, and Colleen Devanney played strong defense from the front row. The score was 15-8 when India Coard rotated into the serving position, and in keeping with her exceptional serving throughout the match, she stayed there till the game was won, 25-8.
