Berkshire vs Deerfield
Berkshire Record: 0-1-0
Although we came out on the wrong side of the score board, we certainly learned a great deal from our first game. Our scrimmage Wednesday was canceled due to heat, so our first half served the purpose of ironing out some of the kinks, figuring out our formation, and getting to know one another in a game setting. Deerfield came to the field having already played a scrimmage and a playday. From the beginning, we found ourselves behind. The first half provided Deerfield with five offensive corners, three of which they capitalized on. Deerfield’s first goal came just 1:30 into the game. The inserter passed the ball to a stick stop at the top of the circle; Deerfield shot the ball and found a forward just off the post to tip it in. Our goal of getting into the circle within the first minute of the game was not to be realized. Just three minutes later, Deerfield extended their lead with another corner play to put them up 2-0. Their final goal came with 1:30 left in the half off yet another corner.
In the second half, we changed formation and began to trust each other. Our communication and defensive support improved and we began to muster some offensive threats. Had we played the whole game like we played the second half, we would have given Deerfield a much more competitive game. Impressive work today on defense by Annette Key ’16, Alli Sugar ’16, and Maureen McCarthy ’14. Ronnie Lortie ’14 was a force offensively. Emily Czaijkowski ’15 turned away seven shots and the Deerfield goaltender saved two. We look forward to facing Ethel Walker at home on Wednesday.
