Field Hockey - Girls Varsity
vs. Canterbury School
|Date:||October 20, 2012|
The Bears lost a heart-breaker on Saturday to a relentless team from Canterbury. We came out flying in the first fifteen minutes of the game and controlled the ball nearly entirely on our offensive half of the field. This resulted in a beautiful goal at the 12:01 mark by Kira Von Steinbergs with an assist from Jeanne Morin. Our ball movement was sharp, our communication was consistent, and our team play was solid. And then we got a bit too confident. With just under ten minutes to play, we started to make passes that were easily picked off by Canterbury, our defense struggled to support one another, and our play simply became sloppy. Canterbury took advantage of a pass across our defensive 25. Their quick and feisty forward picked off our pass and brought the ball in to create a successful offensive opportunity. Suddenly, Canterbury was in the game with a minute to play in the half. They faced halftime confident; we hung our heads.
Throughout the second half, we tried to gain some momentum, but Canterbury simply played with more grit and determination. They iced the win with six minutes to play in the game and sent us off on Parents' Weekend frustrated that we could not dig down enough to pull this one off. Taylor Sorenson finished the game with seven saves. We have our work cut out for us as we face three Class A teams and two Class B teams in our remaining games. With two Class C losses, we will have to fight to win these last games if we have any hope of tournament play. More importantly, though, we will look to play as a team for 60 minutes each game. Our goal will be to put together our best field hockey of the season as we face NMH away on Wednesday.
