Field Hockey - Girls Varsity

The Bears returned to .500 this afternoon as we faced a tenacious Suffield team on their home turf in front of their Parents' Weekend crowd. Though we entered the field fighting off numerous distractions, we were determined not to let the Suffield team ring the bell at the end of the game. We started off slowly, resulting in a quick rush down the field for a series of Suffield offensive threats. We found ourselves on our heels, looking from side to side, wondering who was going to pick up her game. The sloppiness continued for Berkshire through much of the first half. And, though we controlled most of the field, we could not create much of an offensive threat.
In the second half, we changed our field formation from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-2-1; this change provided our midfield and offense with the necessary support to keep the ball inside our offensive 50 for much of the second half. With just 10 minutes left in regulation, we began to find the necessary fire to truly create some potent offense, generated in large part by our midfielders, Olivia Good '15 and Sandra Stephan '15. Sophie Perekslis '14 began to step up into the offense and make nice connections with Ronnie Lortie '14, Jeanne Morin '13 and Chase Gerber '13. Olivia Good '15 had arguably her best game of the season as she stickhandled through multiple Suffield players at a time. At the end of regulation, though we out-shot Suffield, the scoreboard still read 0-0. Determined to win the game, we played most of the ten minute overtime in our offensive half of the field. With two seconds left on the clock, Jeanne Morin '13 and Chase Gerber '13 connected on a play to solidify the win. This was a necessary win for the Bears as we embark upon the second half of our season. The Bears have Wednesday off and look to a full week of preparation before our Parents' Weekend game against Canterbury. The Bears have a great deal to prove on Saturday as we will work to avenge a devastating loss to the Saints last season.
