vs. Simon's Rock College
|Date:||October 17, 2012|
|Score:||5 - 5|
Event Recap:On a beautiful fall afternoon, the Bears geared up to play Simon's Rock College, who were impressively ready for the game despite their 8 players. Berkshire matched the field with 8 on our side, creating a much more open game. Berkshire began the game with a lot of kick in their step, getting some good chances early by forwards Allie McErlean '14 and Molly Crabtree '15. Both keepers kept the scoring at bay, Kylie Wilkes '16 holding her own in between the pipes for the Bears. The stalemate continued for 13 minutes until Lauren Henman '14 booted a rocket passed the Llama's netminder. Less than two minutes later, Henman repeated her magic, using her brute force and strength to muscle her way through the Llama defense, then smartly placing the ball where the goalie was not, putting the Bears up by two! But Simon's Rock did not let the two goal deficit hold them back, and they had a rebuttal to the Bears' goals, tying it up at two apiece in the last seven minutes of the half.
Similar to the first half, no goals were scored in the first 15 minutes of play, as each team did a good job of defending the oncoming traffic. Anna Heissenbuttel '13 was a rock on the back line for the Bears, doing an excellent job of sticking with their speedy forwards. This time it was the Llamas who broke the tie with 15 minutes left in the game. Now playing from behind, Berkshire had to respond with some urgency. After a crossbar shot by Henman, the fire was in Lexi Merison's '15 eyes as she hustled to the rebound and skimmed the ball between the post and the Llama keeper! Continuing the positive momentum, Henman powered another shot by the Simon's Rock goalie, giving the Bears a 4-3 lead with under seven minutes to play. But the scoring didn't stop there. Two quick surges by the talented Llama left forward put them up 5-4! With much character and genuine grit, the Bears did not let up, including the booming players who watched from the sidelines, their awesome cheers echoing across campus! With under 2 minutes to play, Henman passed a short ball to McErlean who saw Eloise Morrow '14 hustling down the right sideline. McErlean's pass got to the gazelle-like Morrow who must have had her Wheaties this morning! Morrow ran like the wind down the right side and booted a soaring kick which made it just over the goalie's hands! The cheers filled the valley, and the Bears walked away with their heads held high after a well-fought battle. The final score was 5-5.
