Soccer - Boys Junior Varsity
vs. Eaglebrook School
|Date:||October 2, 2013|
What a game! The Bears were missing both captains today and after a close to 2 hour bus ride, appeared a little directionless for the first twenty minutes. Eaglebrook had some very talented individuals with good technical skill and the Bears were beat several times. Though Eaglebrook controlled possession and generated some fantastic scoring opportunities, the team began to find its focus. The final twenty minutes of the first half saw much more composure on and off the ball and featured some great give and go plays on the wing. Henry Manley '15, Rawson Clough '17, Chris Kreke '15, and Jason Tao '16 showed great form by one touch passing the ball up the left wing and springing Jason in behind the defense. Despite the increased possession, the Bears entered halftime without having tested the keeper.
The second half saw the Bears generate several great scoring opportunities. Center mids Gerry Gimenez-Baldez'15 and Juan Cedeno '17 switched field often and began to wear down Eaglebrook's defense. On one switch the bears slotted the ball behind the defense to a Jared Renzi '16 who was at a full sprint. He slotted the ball back across the keeper to a forward Chris Zaffanella '15 who slid the ball into the side netting. Up 1-0, the Bears began to believe in themselves and began to mount better and better attacks. Striker Jason Tao '16 had several great check to runs that almost earned us a second goal. It was center back Andre Bogdanovic '15 who played a long goal kick behind the d to a sprinting Juan Cedeno to notch our second.
The Bears earned a penalty late in the second half but couldn't convert. Eaglebrook continued to work hard and slotted a late goal in with 10 minutes remaining but the Bears D held tough. Vaughan Kavanaugh put in some good minutes at left back to close out the game and keep Eaglebrook out of the 18 yard box. It was a great performance by the entire team. Thanks to Mrs. Zaffanella for the post-game treats!
