Event Recap:(24-26; 21-25; 25-11; 18-25)
The Wildcats of The Ethel Walker School visited the Bears today and came away with a hard-fought 3-1 win. Set one saw the Wildcats break out to an 8-3 advantage and lead 11-9 at the start of the second service rotation. Hitting well, and taking advantage of unforced errors by the Bears, Ethel Walker forged ahead to lead by seven at 18-11. At this point, the Bears started to chip away at the Wildcat lead. A couple of kills by Caitlin Kiene ’13 and a Wildcat setting error made it 18-14. Following a Wildcat kill for a side out, a kill from Greta Dorsey ’14, an ace by Caitlin, and a Wildcat hitting error made it 17-19. After Ethel Walker gained another point, the Bears took a 21-20 lead on a couple of Wildcat mistakes, a kill by Em Barclay ’15, and nice serve by Eliza Berg ’13. Two Bear errors put Ethel Walker back in front 22-21. An exchange of sideouts eventually saw the set deadlocked at 24-24. The Bears then blinked first as two unforced errors enabled the Wildcats to take set one 26-24.
In set two the Bears used the serve of Caitlin Kiene to go up 8-6; however, Ethel Walker embarked on a scoring run of their own to move ahead 12-8. At the start of the second service rotation, the Wildcats had a 15-11 lead. Behind the hitting of Katie Stonecipher ’15 and Caitlin, as well as Katie S.’s service, the Bears tied the score at 15-15. Although the Wildcats then rallied to go ahead 22-16, the Bears stage their own rally to trail 20-22. At this juncture, the Bears were unable to generate any positive points, and the Wildcats closed out the set 25-21.
Trailing two sets to none, the Bears refused to surrender and fought hard in set three to forge a 14-8 lead at the end of the first service rotation. In addition to excellent hustle and passing by Katie S., the Bears earned points via the service of Nicole Martinez ’16 and Caitlin as well as kills from Samone Defreese ’15 (3), Caitlin, Katie S., and Greta. With Nicole and Katie serving well, the Bears used the play of Katie Moffett ’13 (a block and a kill) and Samone (a kill and a block) to take control of the set 23-9. We finally closed out the set 25-11 on consecutive errors by the Wildcats.
Building on their momentum from set three, the Bears used the hitting of Nicole, Katie S., Katie M., Em, and Samone, as well as good serves from Elif and Caitlin, to establish a 13-8 lead in set four. With Bears in front 14-11, the Wildcats took the momentum and the lead (15-14) at the start of the second service rotation. The Bears faltered at this point and were unable to maintain their poise as the Wildcats closed out the set (25-18) and the match.
Despite the loss, the Bears played well in spurts today and are starting to play as a team. We will need to build on this as we prepare to face Suffield Academy on Saturday, October 13. Although Caitlin, Samone, Nicole, and Katie M. came up big for us today, Katie S. garnered “Bear” today because of her hustle, serving, and all-around fine play. Elif also had a good day serving and running the offense. Eliza Berg ’12 once again received “Moose” for her positive attitude and on-court hustle. We once again thank our fans for their support and the delicious post-match goodies.
