Cross Country - Boys Varsity
Div. II New England Champions • 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995
Boys Cross Country has been one of the most successful athletic programs at Berkshire since its inception at the School in 1966. The team takes advantage of Berkshire’s beautiful setting with a course (installed in 2008) that has striking views of the campus. The course is challenging, but idyllic in that it truly incorporates a variety of different terrains. Additionally, favorite running loops on country roads in the surrounding rolling hills of southwestern Massachusetts provide even more territory than Berkshire’s own 400 acres.
Berkshire runners compete in the annual Canterbury Invitational, a number of Division I and II dual, tri, and quad meets, and the New England Prep School Championship - which Berkshire has proudly hosted a number of times. Though we have established a tradition of excellence, runners of every talent level are encouraged to come out for Cross Country at Berkshire. Creating a team that appreciates each other and the sport of running is the ultimate goal every season. This year’s squad, though young, is showing qualities of toughness, persistence, and team spirit, all of which bode well for the coming season.
WHERE SOME BEARS HAVE RUN
Berkshire's Cross Country team was made up of 25 wonderful student-athletes that brought their enthusiasm and smiling faces to the trails everyday, hard workout or not. Our season was made up of long runs, speed workouts on the track and hill workouts on the Mountain. Highlights include: Surprise ice cream run to SoCo, beating Crew in Ultimate Frisbee, extreme racing conditions (from the blazing heat at Avon Old Farms to the icy downpour at T.P.), long slow distance in Salisbury, Coach Lloyd, Peter Giordano, Derrick Burt, and Luke Streett shattering Mr. Mulder's fastest Mt. Everett summit time, Danny Kim leading Russian twists, 3x a week ab workouts, Peter Giordano's rendition of "kick-drive-paw", and Mr. Gulotta's last minute arrival at Berkshire's last home meet accompanied with an incredible pre-race speech and starting both the boys' and girls' races. And of course, Sarah Kinney winning her second NEPSTA Division II Championship race at Williston Northampton (this is the third year in a row that a Berkshire female has captured the title!). We will miss our seniors dearly next year and wish them all the best in college: Sarah Kinney, Kara Falk, Peter Giordano, James Donovan, Danny Kim, and Chris Bower. Go Bears!
