Welcome, Alumni!

A Message from Bill Bullock, Director of Development

I will never forget the first time I drove up Berkshire's driveway.  It was 1988, and my girlfriend Bebe Clark (Berkshire Class of 1986 and now my wife) wanted to show me the place that changed her life.  As we pulled off of Route 41, an almost ethereal light was coming off the mountain.  I quickly understood what a special place this was.

When the opportunity arose in 2007 to join Berkshire's faculty, Bebe and I were ecstatic. For Bebe, it was like coming home again, and because I grew up in rural northern Maine, I’ve always cherished the mountains and my time in the outdoors.  We knew that uprooting our three kids from their schools in our tiny Vermont town would be hard.  They were terrified about moving to a new place and not knowing anybody.  But once we arrived on campus, the Berkshire community embraced us, and we were instantly reassured by the friendly faculty and staff members we met.

As a form dean, history teacher, advisor, dorm parent and coach—and, in one of my favorite roles, faculty supervisor of the Fly Fishing Club—I have gotten to know Berkshire very well in the years since.  Now, as Director of Alumni & Development, I look forward to knowing and engaging our school’s alumni as well.  I’ve gotten a head start: I feel as comfortable with Bebe’s classmates and other Berkshire friends as I do with my own.  In fact, four of them are godparents to our two oldest children!

As I look out our dorm window on a spectacular Sunday afternoon, I see students doing the same things many of you used to do on your only free day: playing soccer, throwing Frisbees in Buck Valley, going up on the mountain, and, yes, studying for a Monday exam.  After all, over the years Berkshire School has always remained the same special place, starting with that trip up the driveway.

I hope that you’ll find your way back to campus in the coming year to reconnect with your past.  When you do, please stop by the Kellogg Alumni Center and say hello.

Yours for Berkshire,

Bill Bullock
