The Ugly Duckling

The Berkshire School Theater Department's fall play is The Ugly Duckling by A. A. Milne. The play (oddly, not about ducks) is about a princess who has been cursed to appear "unattractive" to everyone around her including her very narrow-minded parents, a King and Queen who scheme to trick a Prince into marrying her! While this very funny play, it also has an incredibly powerful message that questions stereotypes of beauty and the power of knowing yourself.

Performed entirely with puppets, by a cast of students and faculty, the show is being stage managed by one of our distance learners, Saul Salazar, who will be "calling the show" in the booth via zoom! We also have a four-year Berkshire Theater alum, Merit Glover, acting as our assistant director and costumer on this show while Annie Rosenberg takes care of her newborn twins!

A Safe and Responsible Performance

We are very pleased to offer live performances of The Ugly Duckling in Allen Theater that are safe and responsible for both performers and audience alike. On campus community members can see the play live on Friday, November 6th and Saturday, November 7th at 7:00 and 8:30pm. The play runs about 40 minutes. For our distance learners and our off-campus family and friends, we are offering the 8:30pm shows on both nights via live-stream on our web site.

For attendees, masks are a must and we will limit audiences to about 50 people in socially distanced seating, on a first-come, first-served basis. Performers will also wear masks, but will have microphones to ensure that they can be clearly heard and understood. The use of puppets has also been an amazing tool for responsible staging because the puppets can be close to one another while the puppeteers are safely spaced.

Make Sure to Check Out the Show!

Our tight little cast and crew has truly embraced the old saying, "The show must go on!" We hope you come live (or via live-stream) and enjoy the product of our creative collaboration!
