Field Hockey - Girls Varsity

Berkshire’s field hockey program has competed at the top of the New England Class B over the past ten years, appearing regularly in the Class B New England tournament. The team competes at the highest level with one of the toughest schedules in the league including games against top Class A NEPSFHA teams including Kent, Hotchkiss, Taft, Loomis Chaffee and Deerfield. With top notch athletic facilities, including a turf field specifically for field hockey, the Berkshire program continues to be a top contender in New England.
Berkshire also offers a strong junior varsity program to accommodate all levels of players and allow maximum participation. Every Berkshire field hockey player has the opportunity to compete on a team regardless of her experience or skill level. Regardless of the team, the Berkshire field hockey program aims to provide a rewarding and enjoyable athletic experience for all of its participants who are provided the chance to improve their skills in an environment that values competition, sportsmanship, commitment and teamwork. As players develop through the program, the emphasis changes from participation to performance which culminates in the selection of the varsity team and is reflected in the amount of playing time each girl receives. The philosophy behind the experience is based on the school’s motto: Pro Vita Non Pro Schola Discimus, “Learning—not just for school, but for life,” as our players learn to accept defeat with dignity and win with honor, demonstrating poise, determination, purpose and integrity.

Head coach Janna Holmes took over the varsity field hockey program in 2022, after a successful run at Rivers School where she led the team to three NEPSAC championships and earned 2019's Massachusetts and New England Field Hockey Coach of the Year. A four-year Div. I field hockey player at Boston College where she earned the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year award as well, Coach Holmes has also spent time on the sidelines at the collegiate level, coaching at both UMass Lowell and Stonehill College. She serves in Berkshire's Advancement Office and lives on campus with her wife, Steph, and two children.
