Our Campus

Allen Theater is used for gatherings, including our weekly All School Meetings on Monday and Thursday, special events, as well as Berkshire's theater, dance and musical performances. The theater includes seating for all students, a main stage, a video, sound, and lighting control booth, large lobby area, and a green room for performers and guests.

The adjoined Anne Allen House serves as a boys dormitory, and is also home to the Barbara Kenefick Center for Learning (KCL), WBSL Radio, and Berkshire’s Counseling Office. The building was designed by Berkshire graduate and architect, Steve Nelson ’63.

The Arthur C. Chase Sugar House is home to Berkshire's Maple Syrup Corporation, which annually produces maple syrup from the sap collected from trees around campus. According to early records of the area, maple syrup was being produced on the Berkshire grounds in the mid-1700s and emerged as a school activity under legendary teacher Art Chase, who began his career here in 1937. The syrup produced at Berkshire is available for purchase through the school bookstore, but is often shared among friends over pancakes.

Morgan-Bellas-Dixon Math and Science Center is a 48,000-square-foot academic facility featuring six math classrooms, eight science classroom labs, a 100-seat teaching auditorium, department offices, and Berkshire's Advanced Math/Science Research lab. Opened in 2012 and named after longtime Berkshire teachers Amanda Morgan, Rick Bellas, and Tom Dixon, "MBD" is situated where historic Memorial Hall once stood, and through careful design consideration, the new space clearly echoes its predecessor. 

Within its walls, you’ll find state‑of‑the‑art equipment for advanced research, a terrace that connects lessons to the outdoors, and smart sustainable design—including LEED Gold certification, rain gardens, solar heating strategies, recycled wood paneling, and a biomass boiler.

Berkshire’s new dining hall, located in our Campus Center, has transformed mealtime on campus. It’s bright, open, and full of energy—with large windows providing sweeping views of campus, a heart-stone oven and roomy meal servery, and plenty of space to spread out with friends. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast before class, catching up over dinner, or heading outside to eat on the balcony, it’s become the spot where everyone naturally comes together. With fresh food served by FLIK Dining and a layout that feels more like a favorite café than a cafeteria, Benson is more than just a place to eat—it’s where the Berkshire community connects every day.

Berkshire Hall, the school’s main academic building built in 1930, was renovated in 2008, and sits at the base of Mt. Everett and overlooks Buck Valley. The nearly 40,000-square-foot, four-story building houses our English, history, and language classrooms, as well as College Counseling, The Calderini Family Faculty Center, and administrative offices. Other spaces include Fentress Reading Room, the multi-purpose Great Room, and Berkshire Hall's atrium, which comes alive during performances like Jazz Café and Capriccio.

Opened in spring 2025, Berkshire’s new Campus Center is the hub of student life—a place to eat, connect, and relax. Upstairs, the light-filled dining hall offers mountain views, an open kitchen with a stone hearth oven, and plenty of meal options. Downstairs, the Student Center is home to Shawn’s Place café, a cozy lounge with games and a big-screen TV, and easy access to outdoor hangout space. The building also includes the Music Center, McLanahan Bookstore, Day Student Lounge, mailroom, and Student Life offices—all designed with sustainability in mind, including geothermal heating and huge windows that bring the outside in.

The Chevalier Senior Lodge, formerly known as the “faculty shack” or “Coffee House,” was rebuilt in the summer of 2018, in memory of Stephanie Y. Chevalier '77*. Chevalier, as it's commonly known on campus, serves as a tech-free, place-based classroom that utilizes the Mountain and Berkshire's unique setting to support the School’s environmental science and sustainability courses.

*The structure was first dedicated to Stephanie Chevalier in October 1978 following her sudden death in an automobile accident shortly after her graduation from Berkshire.

Located on the southeastern corner of Stewart Pitch, the Dixon Observatory houses state-of-the-art equipment that gives students and teachers the opportunity to make detailed observations of both bodies within the solar system as well as deep space objects. In addition, the tracking mount and CCD camera allows students to conduct advanced astro-imaging of faint galaxies and nebulae.

Berkshire has 10 dorms on campus, ranging in size and feel. Dorms are organized by "vertical housing," which means that every dorm has students from each grade, allowing upperclassmen to serve as role models. Faculty apartments adjoin each hall and two senior prefects provide leadership throughout life on campus. Additionally, dorms include a common room for gathering and laundry facilities.

The Ed Chase '69 Ski Room is home to the boys and girls varsity and JV alpine ski teams, and includes locker rooms, a ski tuning facility with customized tuning benches and downdraft tables, storage, as well as an equipment and video room.

The space is dedicated in honor of Ed Chase, who began skiing at Berkshire and later became a well-respected figure in the ski world, tuning skis for world champion alpine skiers Phil and Steve Mahre. The facility is located on the north side of Geier Library, on the ground level.

Centrally located on campus, Geier Library is Berkshire's hub for research, whether in the form of our print collection of fiction, nonfiction, and reference books, or our exceptional online databases, ebooks, and scholarly software. With an open, bright design, Geier Library serves as an exhibition space for student artwork and a gathering place for students to study and relax.

The Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center—known simply as “the Jack” on campus—is where a lot of the action happens at Berkshire. The facility features two ice rinks, one Olympic-sized sheet with an 800-seat capacity as well as an NHL-sized sheet with balcony views of the action. During all three seasons, our student athletes regularly visit the Skip Bowman Equipment Room for all their jersey and equipment needs. The Jack also has multiple home-and-visitor locker rooms, athletic offices, team meeting spaces, and the Picotte Family Fitness Center, a fully equipped gym where students and teams train throughout the day. In the offseason, the Jack is transformed to accommodate an artificial turf field as well as to host our Prize Night and Commencement ceremonies.

The Kennard Visual Arts Center is home to Berkshire's extensive visual arts program, including expansive Studio Art and Ceramics classrooms, a digital art lab (photography and music), a digital printing lab, a sculpture studio, and other support facilities. Additionally, The Warren Family Gallery showcases student artwork as well as exhibits from alumni and local artists. The Calderini Family Faculty Center is located on the third floor, and is home to the English, history, and languages departments.

Berkshire opened the Music Center in the spring of 2025, as part of our new Campus Center. Located on the third floor, the space includes three large classrooms, acoustically optimized practice rooms, a recording studio, generous instrument storage, office space, and a comfortable suite for student gatherings or ensemble work.

The foot Ritt Kellogg Mountain Center was named for Peter Rittenhouse "Ritt" Kellogg, Jr. '85, an avid climber, skier, and Outward Bound leader who passed away in an avalanche in Alaska in 1992. Located on the north side of Geier Library at ground level, the space serves as the home to the Ritt Kellogg Mountain Program (RKMP), established in 1994 to celebrate Ritt Kellogg's life. 

The Ritt Kellogg Mountain Center serves as a central meeting space where students and faculty can hold pre-trip meetings, sign out RKMP gear and bikes and includes a library of wilderness guides, natural history books, and area maps.

The Soffer Athletic Center is a multi-sport facility that includes a 10-court squash center, two basketball and volleyball courts, a 25-foot climbing wall and fully-equipped strength and conditioning area, as well as a dace student, home-and-visitor locker rooms, and meeting and office spaces. Soffer, know on campus as the "SAC," is also used as an event space to host such events as Winter Carnival, school dances, and academic testing.

Berkshire has long held a commitment not only to sustainability—but to preparing students as environmental stewards who think critically, act responsibly, and lead with purpose.

Here are some highlights of sustainability in action here on campus:

• Our two-megawatt, eight-acre solar field is located on the east side of campus and produces as much as 40-percent of the School's energy supply. The solar field was part of an energy master plan developed by students in Berkshire's Sustainability Program and, in 2012, was the largest solar installation in the state of Massachusetts and the largest operating solar facility of its kind at any private secondary school in the U.S. 
• With further investment in renewable solar energy in Bolton, Mass., the School is able to reach 100% of its electric energy needs through renewable sources. 
• Four EV Charging Stations (two located at the Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center and two located behind the Morgan-Bellas-Dixon Math & Science Center)
• Geothermal heating and cooling system in the Campus Center
• Electric-powered Zambonis
• Berkshire's commitment to sustainability includes the reduction of water bottles around campus. To meet that commitment, several water dispensaries have been installed around campus which encourage the use of reusable water bottles.
