Eighteen Berkshire students have received 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, including Ruby Merritt ’19 who earned a National Silver Medal.
Together, the students shared 32 total individual regional awards (Massachusetts) which are sponsored by the Boston Globe in the categories of Ceramics & Glass, Digital Art, Drawing and Illustration, Mixed Media, Painting, Photography, and Sculpture.
Seven students earned a regional Gold Key Award for their art. Merritt’s art—a mixed media piece entitled The Stitches We Hide—was selected as the Art Department's 2019 Purchase Prize recipient and will be framed and on permanent display on the Kennard Visual Arts Center.
"I am honored to receive national recognition for my art,” Merritt said. “This piece was part of a series that explored the metaphorical masks we wear in our daily lives, and I feel success in knowing the work reached a wide audience. It has also been interesting to receive feedback about what the piece means to different people. I think that is the power of art, and I’m glad my work was able to spark a variety of reactions.”
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for students in grades 7-12.
