A new tradition will kick-off this January for Berkshire’s girls varsity hockey program.
The Bears will host Buckingham Browne & Nichols in the inaugural #SkateforHer game on Friday, January 10 at the Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center. The event will raise money and awareness for the Women’s Sports Foundation, a non-profit organization that advocates for equality for female sports.
“This event, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of coeducation this year, is a testament to the contributions and achievements that young women made, and continue to make, in our commitment to academic, artistic, and athletic excellence," said Bebe Bullock '86, English teacher and coeducation anniversary coordinator.
During the game, members of Berkshire’s first female hockey team (1989-1990) will be recognized for their contributions as trailblazers at the School. In addition, young fans will have the opportunity to meet and skate with members of the current varsity team, and a silent auction of specially designed game-worn jerseys is planned.
The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start.
Second-year varsity head coach Lisa Marshall has organized the event and said the team hopes to support other female-based organizations in the future.
"This game represents a special opportunity for the team to play for something that is much larger than themselves, with regard to Berkshire and beyond, and it will allow them to come together in support of a great cause. We are looking forward to what is sure to be a remarkable evening at the Jack,” said Marshall.
