Berkshire artists earned a total of 28 Scholastic Art Awards in 2020. The awards are sponsored by The Boston Globe and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, and were received this year for excellence in studio art, ceramics, photography, drawing, painting, and digital art.

Four students—Gigi Brown ’20 (drawing), Shun Iwata ’20 (ceramics), Michelle Rhee ’21 (ceramics), and Michelle Wang ’20 (painting)—earned Gold Keys, the highest honor.

Wang said her acrylic painting, “Dichotomy,” “explores the relationship between stereotypes and reality and is inspired by [her] experience as a Chinese student studying abroad.”

Rhee believes that it was the glaze created in her studio in Korea that made her piece stand out to the judges. “Ceramics has always been my favorite subject since elementary school,” Rhee said. “After continuing to take (ceramics) at Berkshire, I realized that’s where my passion is.”

"The Arts Department was very excited to have so many winning entries to the Scholastic Art Awards this year,” said Arts Department Chair Paul Banevicius. “I think the number and variety of winning pieces reflects the broad range and depth of projects that students are exploring in the arts program. They are producing sophisticated work in a wide range of media, from painting, ceramics, and sculpture, to photography and digital art."

Congratulations to all the award winners!
