Hockey - Boys Junior Varsity vs. Avon Old Farms School

Event Type: Regular

Date: December 11, 2013

Score:Berkshire 1 - Avon 6

Event Recap:

Berkshire travelled to Avon following an improved weekend of hockey. Players had spent the earlier part of the week working hard in preparing for a physical contest, knowing that the Winged Beavers club would be a tough matchup. Returners Connor Shalleck '16 and Johnny Grogan '14 set a consistently positive example by challenging the Avon players, and the team started the game well in following their lead. Back and forth play characterized much of the opening period, with P.J. Webb '15 and Shalleck providing an effective offensive punch. Newcomers Larry Matt '17 and Liam Thor '17 hand in Berkshire's lone goal of the period, but the Bears found themselves trailing at the end of the first.

The second period was a matchup of special teams with Avon managing to convert a few of their opportunities, and Berkshire pressing but not being rewarded. Vaughan Kavanaugh '15 and Jonathan Chudacoff '14 handled much of the extra man responsibilities from the point and generated several scoring opportunities, but the puck wouldn't find its way into the goal.
Playing behind entering the third period forced the Bears to take too many risks and Avon took advantage of the Berkshire mistakes. Though the final was in favor of Avon, the game was evenly matched and the Bears look forward to competing against the Winged Beavers later in the year.
