The JV boys picked up their 2nd win of the season with probably their best basketball of the season. The game got off to a terrific start for us. We hit shots, defended well, and cashed in on easy opportunities. Before the Bearcats could blink, we led 11-0. Hotchkiss, though, did not go away and they started to get a couple of open looks -- especially off of missed shots with long rebounds -- and they cut the lead to 4. We withstood the counterpunch, however, and were able to maintain a 6 point cushion, 22-16, at the break. When we looked at the score book at the 1/2, we saw that our opponents had hit nothing but 5 threes and a free throw. They were shooting the ball well, but were not getting much else going. If we could maintain that, we would be in good shape.
Though Hotchkiss scored the first couple of points in the second half, to cut the lead down, we really got hot from the field and our pressure defense resulted in a bunch of easy scores for us. We had excellent play from everyone who went in and the cushion for us ballooned up to 22. From there, however, got complacent down the stretch and a hot shooting Hotchkiss team started to cut quickly into the lead. Before we could catch our breath, Hotchkiss had cut the lead to 4 with 2 minutes remaining. They had the ball with a chance to get it closer, but they couldn't. We could have iced it with some free throws, but they clanged out. Finally, finally Creedy Acosta and Djetry Joseph sealed it from the line with some bonus free throws and the team could breathe easy and celebrate the good, team win.
We hope to keep it going on Wednesday against a good TP team at home.
