Hockey - Girls Junior Varsity
vs. Greenwich Academy
|Date:||February 12, 2014|
|Score:||Berkshire 3 - GA 0|
The Berkshire Bears improved to 5-4 with a 3-0 win at home over Greenwich Academy. Goalie Haleigh Sullivan ‘15 earned her first shut-out of the year with 20 saves. For their first time in the program’s history the JV squad faced-off on the Olympic surface in honor of the international games.
With so much ice to cover, the coaches were thrilled to exercise the deep bench, skating a full four lines throughout the game. Leading the charge with her first-ever goal in an ice hockey game, Lucia Liencres ‘17 stuffed a rebound past the GA goalie after ten minutes of play to put the Bears on the big board. Following hard after, Logan Bell ‘15 scored her first of two for the day just seconds later to give the team in green a comforable lead at the start of the second.
Excellent defensive plays by captain Amelia Patsalos-Fox ‘14 and Elle Mattsson ‘15 allowed the Bears to stretch their legs in a new break-out system designed for the big ice. With the puck moving at lightning speed, the GA goalie did impressive work fending off the determined Berkshire forwards, but found it a daunting challenge when Sabrina Tattersfield ‘15 earned yet another assist after passing the puck through a pair of GA skates to a wide-open Bell, who sniped a shot from the top of the circle to open the lead to three.
With as many penalties as goals, the Bears found themselves in a new position - the box. With two tripping calls and bench minor for too many players, Berkshire spent a total of 4:30 on the penalty kill including thirty seconds of 3-5 hockey.On the road to close out the season, the Bears head to Westminster and Rumsey for their final matchups of the winter.
