Hockey - Girls Junior Varsity
|Date:||February 20, 2013|
The Girls JV Hockey team earned their second W of the season with a 9-0 win over Millbrook. Logan Bell '15 opened up scoring for the Bears just 16 seconds into the game, assisted by senior captain Maddie Bricken. Berkshire took advantage of their deep bench, dressing all five lines for the first time this season. After battling for the puck throughout the period and with several shots that bounced off the posts, Allegra Hortsmann '14 scored unassisted, followed by Sophie Peresklis '14 one minute later, assisted by Elizabeth Hosage '15. With just two minutes remaining in the period, Emma Weinstein '16 opened the lead to 4-0 with her first career goal.
In the second period, the Bears continued their scoring onslaught less than one minute into play with Grey-line goal, scored by Hosage and assisted by Liza Jane Branch '15. Wasting no time, Lexi Merision '15 popped another shot past the Millbrook tender, bringing the score to 6-0 with 13:08 remaining in the second. With shortened bench, the usual first and second lines, as well as stalwart defense-women Amelia Patsolos-Fox '14 and Elle Mattsson '15 took a turn at cheering on the team while the third, fourth and fifth lines - many of whom have been on the ice for only a few months - joined defenders Kara Falck '15, Catherine Xu '14, and Taylor Sorenson '13 for plenty of playing time. Before the close of the period, Xu widened the gap to seven with a breakaway goal, the first tally of her career.
To close out the game, Falck and Sorenson joined their teammates for a rest while our newest players led the charge on the ice. The "blue line" - all new to hockey and playing a full game for the first time - worked hard rotating shifts with the "red line" - each of whom made the jump this year from the Rec. hockey program to JV - while the "grey line" (with two new-to-hockey players of its own) took over on defense. It was a thrilling win for the girls with two more goals in the final period, scored by Fraiman and Hannah Honan '15. To top off the excitement, goalie Haleigh Sullivan '15 earned her the first shut-out of her career with 12 saves.
Congratulations to the Blue Line - Weinstein, Sophie Needles '16, and Reilly Kennedy '15 - for a fantastic job well done!The Bears will close out their season on Friday with a home game against Rumsey Hall 'A' at 3:30.
