Hockey - Boys Thirds

Greetings, fans, and welcome to another riveting season of Thirds Hockey. The season got off to a rocky start Saturday, as the boys traveled to Westminster for their opening tilt. With the usual charter jet in the shop, head coach Mike "Baby Daddy" Bjurlin and assistant Paul "Grantland" MacKenzie rustled up some vans from the motor pool, loaded up the boys, and headed out for Simsbury. 20 minutes into the trip, MacKenzie had to turn back to retrieve the bag of uniforms that the team had left at home in its zeal to hit the road. This snafu turned out to be an ominous sign of things to come.
Once they hit the ice, the Bears were no match for the Martlets' speed and disciplined play. There were a few highlights for the green team: de facto captain Eric "Senioritis" Smith, '14 brought his usual positive spirit and hustle, newcomer Mike Schiffer, '15 proved to be a tenacious blueliner, and Thirds stalwarts James "Donny" Donovan, '15 and Matt "Beans" Spaniol, '16 did what they could to thwart the Westy attack and try to generate some offense.
As the vans headed home, one racing back to campus so the boys could make the bus to Taft for the D'Arco Cup game, the other taking the more leisurely "Chipotle" route, the players tried to put the loss behind them, and the coaches plotted strategy for the upcoming game at Kent on Wednesday.
