Basketball - Girls Varsity
|Date:||January 15, 2014|
|Score:||Berkshire 56 - Canterbury 15|
The Varsity Girls Basketball team hosted the Canterbury Saints for a midweek matchup. The gym was quiet and the fans were sparse, but the Bears charged ahead and overpowered the Saints players. The mismatched game gave all of the Berkshire girls a chance to get in the rotation and work on the fundamental elements that make them a solid basketball team. The final score was 56-15 in favor of the Bears.
Samone DeFreese '16 led the way, scoring 22 points and grabbing six boards, in conjunction with Kristalyn Baisden '15 (eight steals, seven assists, and four points). Every other Berkshire girl made solid contributions to the win, too. Hannah Cooke '14, Camryn Biasin '14, and Sarah Kinney '15 each had six points; Katie Stonecipher '15 and Kendall Smith '14 were strong on the boards, with five and four rebounds, respectively; and Mary Ward '15 strengthened her defensive game while guarding some of the Saints' ball handlers. Despite the lopsided score, the Bears missed far too many open and easy shots, and this is something they will have to work on down the stretch of the season.
Next up for the varsity girls is Kent, who will be looking to avenge an early season loss to Berkshire. The game is in Kent, CT at 2:30pm on Saturday.
