Basketball - Girls Varsity
|Date:||January 11, 2014|
|Score:||Berkshire 45 - Taft 35|
Coming off a hard-fought battle with Loomis the night before, the Girls Varsity Basketball team was ready to bounce back with a big win against the Taft Rhinos. And win is what they did! The Berkshire Bears, backed by a supportive alumni weekend crowd, pushed the pace of the game from the opening tip. The Rhinos surprisingly hung with the Bears for most of the game, but Berkshire's active, high-intensity basketball was too much for the Rhinos, who were held to just 10 points in the second half. The home team came out on top, 45-35.
Tri-captain Camryn Biasin '14 came off the bench to spark a second half surge for the Bears, and her determination and composure throughout the entire game gave Berkshire the edge it needed to defeat Taft. Biasin scored a season-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbed five strong boards. Samone DeFreese '16 was the leading scorer for the Bears and was just shy of a double-double (17 points, nine rebounds). However, DeFreese's performance on the defensive end was perhaps her best of the season. DeFreese frustrated Taft's leading scorer with her energetic, full-court pressure, and along with tri-captain Hannah Cooke '14 Kristalyn Baisden '15 and Sarah Kinney '15, made it difficult for the Rhinos to get the ball down the floor and settle into their offense. Cooke was Berkshire's third leading scorer with eight points, while Baisden dished four assists and grabbed four steals. Kinney played her typical stingy defense, andKendall Smith '14 and Emmi Graebner '14 continued to improve on their rebounding dominance in the paint. Smith's offense rebounds helped give the Bears multiple opportunities on offense, and one of her particularly strong offensive boards and successful put-backs ignited the Bears momentum to extend their lead on Taft.
The girls will take a much needed rest day before returning to Duryee Court for a day of practice before another three-game week. Up next is a scrimmage against the Williams College JV team on Tuesday afternoon!
