In spite of the four inches of snow that had fallen on the Berkshire Mountain, the Taft Rhinos made the trek up Route 63 to the Duryee Court today, sporting a 7 - 2 record. Would the Bears be able to stick the Rhino’s nose into a snow bank? Could they hang tough with a good team? Well, the first half surely demonstrated that we could play with them as we nipped and tucked our way right up to a 26-24 lead with just over a minute left in the half. Then it happened, the mental lapse, as we committed five fouls in the last minute and could not run the floor with the Rhinos as they stuck their long horn into the side of the Bears, finishing with a 10 – 0 run and leaving the court leading, 34 to 26. This was a lead they never relinquished, because in the second half they put on a clinic in running the floor. We could just not keep up with their blazing speed, and when Kyle Kobis picked up his fourth foul early in the second stanza it was all but over. The second half saw their lock-down defense hold us to seventeen points, while they poured in forty-five points, showing why they have a 7-2 record. Bottom line, the Bears lost to a better team today. On a positive note, we have one more chance at them next week down in Watertown and the group knows that can play with them if we do the work.
Kyle Kobis scored 15 points today. Cody Turner followed with an outstanding performance; he added 12 points and played some tenacious defense. Eric Samuel chipped in 5 while being a stalwart on the boards, and Christopher Cooke had 4, Chris Gaynor 3 and Mike Allen 2. Everyone got some minutes and all played hard, getting some valuable experience against a good team. There is no rest on tap as we have a game on Saturday against Kent and on Monday against Millbrook. There are still plenty of games to play and lots of work to do.
