Div. I New England Champions • 2006, 2003

Ice hockey was established as a varsity sport for girls in 1991, and since then Berkshire School has developed a strong tradition of excellence.  Berkshire entered the New England Prep School league as a Div. II team and, after capturing the New England Championship in 1999, became a Div. I program.  During the teams’ 15 years at the Div. I level, the Bears have made the playoffs nine times and earned two New England Championships (2003 and 2006).

In a typical season, Berkshire will play around 25 games.  The Bears play one of the most competitive schedules in New England with games against the top Div. I teams in Eastern and Western New England.  The members of this program pride themselves on building a foundation where character and teamwork are the focus.  Players develop their skill sets while working within a team and learning how to play the game at a faster pace.  The skills the players learn on and off the ice will help them attain their aspirations of playing at the next level while also setting them up for success outside of the ice rink.

During the 2008-2009 season, the girls moved into the new state-of-the-art athletic center with two sheets of ice, one Olympic sized and the other an NHL rink. The Jackman L. Stewart Athletic Center includes a fitness and training center, which the team uses for its off-ice training, as well as a training room and spacious.

2013-2014 SEASON RECAP

The team had a strong year, finishing with a record of 11-10-3. Eight of the ten losses were by a goal and the Bears found themselves in OT seven times this season.  Berkshire took third place at the E.G. Watkins December tournament.  The Bears came from a third period, 5-1 deficit against Winchendon to earn a thrilling overtime victory and a chance to play for the bronze against Culver Academy.  The girls finished the season with a strong effort and a record of 3-1-2 over the last six games during which they tied the eventual New England championships. The core of the squad returns in 2014 and looks to build on the momentum gained this season.
