Hockey - Girls Varsity

Event Recap:The girls varsity hockey team traveled the short trip to Hotchkiss on Wednesday afternoon for their last game before the long winter weekend. Things looked bright for the Bears from the get-go, when Lauren Henman '14 won the face-off and with great poise carried the puck into the Hotchkiss zone where she skated behind the net. Turning away from pressure, Henman curled to the left side of the net and made a crisp pass to Rhi Vanderbeek '13 waiting in the slot, who got an incredible shot off! But the Hotchkiss goalie came up big with the save. The possession and pressure continued for the Bears through the first five minutes as one shift in the Bearcat zone spilled well into the next. But unfortunately no goals were scored out of this great play by Berkshire, and Hotchkiss, by the end of the period, started to get some momentum, especially with the two powerplay opportunities they had in the second half of the period.
Early in the second, a Bearcat found her way into the penalty box and Berkshire's powerplay did an excellent job getting shots off, especially from defensemen Bella Sinsigalli '13 and Kira von Steinbergs '13. But half way through the second period, Berkshire found themselves in penalty trouble, allowing Hotchkiss to get on the scoreboard. Another goal for Hotchkiss came shortly thereafter, putting them up by two heading into the third.
A flukey dump-in deflection goal came for Hotchkiss with 11:18 remaining in the game. Despite being down by three goals, Berkshire did not let down. One example of this tough play came from Kate Klimaszewski '16, who was going all-out - stopping on pucks, forechecking with grit, and back-checking very effectively. The Bears came close a number of times in the third, but just couldn't capitalize on their chances. The final score was 3-0 for Hotchkiss. The Bears face Pomfret on February 6th.
