On Saturday evening, the Bears faced the Spartans of Lawrence Academy in their first home game since the return from the holiday vacation. The first period saw a lot of back and forth play, and both teams played strong defensively. In particular, Olivia Good '15, did a great job in the back, stepping up at the blue line in the offensive zone and keeping a solid hold on her mark in the defensive end. Heading into the second period the score was tied at 0. The evenly matched play continued throughout the second, but the Bears started to get some momentum in the offensive zone. The class of 2016 line of Kylie Wilkes '16 centering Alli Sugar '16 and Kate Klimaszewski '16, had fantastic speed and energy and were not afraid to get gritty in the corners. After a Berkshire penalty late in the second, the puck found itself deep in the Spartan zone where Murphy Newman '13 and Rhi Vanderbeek '13 forechecked to dish to puck into the slot. Several players, both Berkshire and Lawrence got pieces of the puck, but Lauren Henman '14 had the last word and roofed it into the top shelf to put the Bears up by a goal!
Lawrence answered back early in the third period, but Berkshire had a rebuttal with 6:42 to play, up by 1 for the second time. A superb forecheck by Sandra Stephan '15 forced the Spartan defenseman to cough the puck up to Henman rushing into the Lawrence zone. Like a bullet, Henman sped to the slot and ripped a high shot that hit the back netting! After that goal, a series of unfortunate penalties occurred for both teams, and the remainder of the game was played with at least one player from either team in the box. Jeanne Morin '13 had an excellent game in the goal, especially in the third when she was faced with numerous shots with traffic in front. During this whole jumble of players and penalties, the Spartans evened the score again, and the final score was 2-2.
