On Thursday evening, the girls varsity hockey team took the ice in their first game of the E. G. Watkins Tournament at Cushing Academy. From the get-go, play was evenly matched, both teams finding some opportunities yet strong defense on each end kept the game at a stalemate after regulation time.
As time closed down in the third period, a flurry of scoring chances almost broke the tie for the Bears. A lot of hard work came from forward Kylie Wilkes '16, who hustled around the ice, attacking full speed on the forecheck. Half way through the third period, Rhi Vanderbeek '13 scooped the puck up on the left side of the ice, carried it into the slot and popped the puck up toward the net, hitting the cross bar. All four defenders played strong for the Bears, and Bella Sinsigalli '13 came up huge with minutes left in regulation when she made a diving poke-check on a 3 on 2.
At the buzzer, the game went into a 5 minute OT period. Berkshire goalie Jeanne Morin '13 stood on her head, making some magnificent saves that kept the Bears in he game. 5 minutes went by with no goals for either team, and it moved into a 1 minute, 5 on 5, still no goals. It then moved to a 4 on 4, and Winchendon was able to capitalize, taking the sudden death win.
The final score was 1-0 for Winchendon. The Bears take on Gilmour Academy and Northwood School on Friday.
