Event Recap:The Berkshire Bears traveled to Taft School on Wednesday afternoon to face the Rhinos in their third game of the season. It took some time for both teams to get their feet underneath them and adjust to the unique bench. The Rhinos picked up their momentum a bit quicker and capitalized on a chance half way through the first period, taking a 1-0 lead. But the Berkshire players responded quickly when after the center ice puck drop, they forechecked in the offensive zone and got possession of the puck. Off of the cycle, Lauren Henman '14 got a quick shot off, leaving the puck in prime real estate in front of the net, where Ali Sugar '16 stuffed the puck toward the Taft goalie's pads. After Sugar's effort, Kylie Wilkes '16 knocked the puck over the goal line, tying the score up at 1 apiece! Just three minutes later, Henman powered through the neutral zone with the puck and fired a wrist shot off just outside of the slot, sniping the puck in top shelf!
While the Bears were up by a goal heading into the second period, there was certainly room for improvement. In our defensive end of the ice, Berkshire goalie Jeanne Morin '13 had some fantastic saves, keeping the Bears in the game. At the other end of the ice, the Bear forwards tallied 15 shots total in the period, but could not put the biscuit in the basket. The evenly matched play continued, but the Rhinos tied up the score with just over 5 minutes left in the period. Following a string of Berkshire penalties, Taft scored again with 1:22 to play in the second.
After a tiring two periods, the Berkshire players worked hard in the third to muster up some energy in their legs to get the game back to a stalemate. A big opportunity came for the Bears around the 11 minute mark when Taft got a penalty. Defensemen Bella Sinsigalli '13 and Ronnie Lortie '14 fired off a handful of shots from the umbrella, but the Taft goalie kept the puck out of the cage. Despite the strong efforts in the Taft zone toward the of the period by the Bears, they just couldn't get the puck past the goal line. The final score was 3-2 for Taft. The Bears hope to turn their luck around on Saturday when they face Tabor Academy.
