The JV softball team is traditionally home to the inexperienced and enthusiastic. Practices focus on the very basics of the game in the early going: throwing correctly so that arms aren’t sore after the second practice, keeping eyes firmly glued to a ball being caught in the outfield or batted from the box, leading, smart base running and crisp infield play. As a coach, I focus on defense first and that has paid off in the last several seasons, when both infield and outfield defensive plays have kept the Bears either in the game against a hot-hitting opponent or have allowed us to pull out close games by making crucial outs. We have also had the good fortune to have inexperienced but very coachable pitchers over the years and a smattering of second or occasionally third year players to help run the defensive effort in the field and lead the offense with good bats. I look forward to more of the same this season.
