A magnificent effort by Chris Cooke spurred the Berkshire to a 5-0 win in seven innings over Avon on Wednesday. Cooke struck out seven and limited the Winged Beavers to five baserunners while some leather-wielding Bears made sure they could not take flight. Calder Ryan, Brady Wilson, Mark Driscoll and Henry Thomas put together a beautiful performance in the infield to support the starter.
Berkshire scored three runs in the first inning to build an early lead using aggressive baserunning and a timely hit from Jake Grant to do the damage. Henry Thomas racked up two RBIs with a clutch double in the fifth inning. Trevor Berry tacked on a couple of base knocks; Will Perekslis earned his EH salary with a bomb to left center; and Tristan Gaynor came off the bench for a sweet single.
The quick victory -- seven innings in just over an hour and a half -- moves the Bears' record to 6-1 in league play and positions them well for a high seeding in the j.v. playoffs, should NEPSAC athletic directors elect to go that route.
Next up for Berkshire: a Friday afternoon tilt at Indian Mountain and a Saturday afternoon session versus Millbrook.
