Millbrook took the field ready to play and got off to a quick and commanding 5-0 lead. Winning every single draw control, they possessed the ball for the first ten minutes of the game. Berkshire had some chances to transition the ball but a few errant passes sent it right back into the defensive end. To those watching, the start of this game might have suggested a blowout, but the Bears responded after an opportune timeout and began to play their game.
Chipping away at the Millbrook defense and burying two goals, the momentum seemed to shift in Berkshire's favor. Strong Berkshire defense by Julia Slyer '14, Amelia Patsalos-Fox '14, Ronnie Lortie '14, Maureen McCarthy '14
, and Lucy Hollister '15
and goaltending by Britt Brown '13
staved off some Millbrook charges and the score at the half was 5-2.
Opening the second half, Millbrook scored quickly but for the following 20 minutes it was all Berkshire. Syd Beldock '14
(three goals, two assists) and Elle Mattsson '15
(three goals, one assist) streaked to goal on some excellent fast break opportunities that started with heads up defensive play. Sandra Stephan '15, Molly Crabtree '15
, and Murphy Newman '13
were instrumental in midfield transition as Berkshire passing began to click. Newman
also recorded three caused turnovers, while Stephan
had three draw controls. With six minutes to play, Millbrook responded with a goal and went into a stall with a score of 7-5. Mattsson
answered and then Allie McErlean '14
scored off of a great feed from Beldock
to tie the game. Both teams had some chances in the waning minutes of regulation but clutch goalie saves would stifle those attempts.
Millbrook won the first possession in overtime and their shifty center drew a foul that resulted in the game winning goal. Berkshire had some excellent chances, including two free position shots, but the Millbrook defense and goalie prevented the goals. Both teams fought hard until the last whistle and should be commended for an exciting battle.
