Berkshire continued their tough early schedule by heading down to take on Avon Old Farms. The Bears received some bad news the morning of the game as three-year starting goalie, Tyler Behring, could not play due to illness and instead freshman Connor Shalleck was asked to step and fill the senior’s role.
Knowing that this was going to be the freshman’s first start the talented Berkshire defensed looked to up their game against a tough AOF unit. Avon was able to gain an early 2-0 lead against the Bears before Sam Woodcock scored off of a pass from Michael Allen to make the game 2-1. Unfortunately, the Avon goalie made a save with 25 seconds left in quarter and caught the Bears in transition and Avon snuck a goal in with 2.8 seconds left for the 3-1 lead. The second quarter was hard fought and each side put in 3 goals, with Allen, Woodcock, and Robbie Fiamengo finding the back of the net and Berkshire was down 6-4 at half. In the third quarter, Charlie Corcoran scored from a Regan Haas pass but AOF added three goals so the Bears were down by four goals. The fourth quarter saw the Bears try to make a run behind two Mike Allen goals but they ultimately fell short 11-7.
The defense was led by Cooper Fersen and Jack O’Donoghue who both played a great game. Freshman Connor Shalleck stepped up and got better as each quarter went on. He should be proud of the performance and he gained some valuable experience against one of the better teams in the league.
Berkshire will host Loomis on Saturday at 5 p.m.
