Event Recap:First Boat Comes from Behind to Defeat Pomfret, Lincoln. Girls' crew made their annual trek to Pomfret to take on the Griffins as well as the Lincoln School, Worcester Academy, and Medford High School. A strong, gusty headwind made conditions a bit tricky, but the girls met the challenge head on and emerged successful. The second boat of Molly "Moneill" O'Neill, '17, Morgan "Windy City" Handwerker, '15, Moet "and Chandon" Matsuoka, '17, Lindsy "the Vineyardhaven Valkyrie" Dario, '17, and cox Lulu "Lemon" Kauffman, '17, discovered how difficult it can be to race as novices at the second boat level, where most of their competitors have at least one season of experience. The girls struggled with the rough water, but persevered, finishing fourth, ahead of Medford. The first boat race was a very satisfying win after a couple of tough results in 2013 and 2012. With a healthy Sophie "Lyons" Perekslis, '14, at stroke, Annette "Ginger" Key, '16, at 3, Arwen "el Presidente" Neski, '15, at 2, Renee "Aspen" Dreher, '15, in the bow, and cox Olivia "B" Good, '15, the boat started slowly, but remained composed, working their way through the competition to win by three seconds over Pomfret, with Lincoln, Worcester, and Medford much further behind. Although it was a long day, the win and a stop at Chipotle made it all worthwhile. With the next race not until Sunday, May 4 (Founder's Day), the girls have time to regroup and continue to refine their racing tactics. Row Bears!
