Crew - Girls Varsity
vs. NEIRA Regatta
|Date:||May 25, 2013|
Event Recap:The girls' first boat traveled to scenic Worcester, MA on Saturday for the annual NEIRA championship regatta. The girls endured a cold, drizzly, and windy day at Lake Quinsigamond (which means "long water between two highways" in the local Algonquin dialect), but were cheered by the solid turnout of Berkshire fans and the chili, meatballs, and cornbread they brought. Friday night featured the traditional Chipotle extravaganza, followed by an evening of careful preparation for finals on the part of the underformers, and gloating on the part of the just-graduated Maddy Maher, '13.
Of the 26 boats that compete in the league, the top 18 are selected to compete at the regatta, based on their season's results. The Bears went into the regatta as the 16th seed, and came out in 16th place in New England. Led by Maher, the girls recovered from a rough start to put together a solid race in their heat, finishing ahead of 15th ranked Medford, but behind #10 BB&N, thus failing to qualify for the afternoon finals. Joining Maher were Sophie Perekslis, '14, Juliet Duplessie, '16, Arwen Neski, '15, and cox Olivia Good, '15. It was a great season for the first boat, featuring the introduction of a new boat, the Steven W. Lloyd, victories over strong rivals like Miss Porter's and Taft, and solid growth on the part of newcomers Duplessie and Good. Thanks for following the team this season, and we'll see you next year! Remember, only 291 days until the trailer leaves for Tampa!
