Girls' crew opened the 2013 campaign at their home course, hosting Taft, Choate, and Chase Collegiate on a sunny, breezy spring day. The day began with a christening ceremony for the girls' new boat, the Steven W. Lloyd. The boat is named in honor of the founder of Berkshire crew who sadly passed away last summer. Several members of the Lloyd family, including Steven's sister and brother, as well as his wife and four daughters were present. They shared their thoughts about Steve and did the honors with the champagne, sending the boat off in appropriate style.
On to the racing: the Third Boat led the day off, turning in a solid row, but finishing well behind the Rhinos and Wild Boars. Second Boat suffered mechanical failure at the start, as their steering cable broke and they were unable to complete the race. First Boat, Sophie Perekslis, '14, Bryn Kenny, '14, Arwen Neski, '15, Rhi Vanderbeek, '13, and Olivia Good, '15, got behind off the start, then battled back, making up ground on Taft and taking a slight lead on Choate. With 300 meters to go, however, Choate found another gear, pulling away from the Bears and overtaking the Rhinos just before the finish line. It was the closest race of the day, and bodes well for the upcoming race at Pomfret.
